Chapter Seven
The Regulator
(Arbitrary Algorithm: Year 571)
âAs commander of the Arbitrary Algorithm, I made the decision I had to in order to ensure the success of the mission.â
-The Hypersleep Chronicles
Isaac was surprised at how quickly the experience they all shared at the last stop had shifted the mood of the entire crew. Tinah was an astute educator, but she wasnât too enthusiastic about their last stop to offer her usual fun facts and planet scenarios. Usha had graced him with the unexpected therapy session, though she was no longer providing her off-the-cuff words of encouragement, helping to keep everyone optimistic and focused on the mission. Brad wasnât the most optimistic as it was, but he no longer provided the crew with his underappreciated dark humor that made things more light-hearted when they needed to be. Similarly, Justine wasnât getting in her usual jabs at the expense of Brad that had everyone besides Karina cracking up.
There was an ominous vibe throughout the ship that no one could even attempt to avoid. Isaac needed a victory soon or the crew would start losing faith in his mission. Isaac contemplated all the different team-building activities he had forced his employees to participate in over the years. His ace, the classic pizza party, would not be an option out here in the great unknown. Good luck on a delivery driver finding them here, he thought.
The food got old at their fourth stop on this journey. Isaac hoped they would find somewhere to stay by now, although it was a possibility they would never find somewhere too. There were five options for food ready at the press of a button and a three-minute wait: Jollof rice, chicken tikka masala, jambalaya, flautas, and chicken tenders. The chicken fingers were so big that they were more like chicken hands. Though all the options were unique, they all tasted the same.
This food was made to keep them alive and offer no enjoyment in the process. Isaac wished he would have brought some Old Bay with him. That is one spice that has stood the test of time.
Isaac daydreamed about the world they would eventually explore and that it would compare to the Earth in the late Devonian era, the Age of the Fish. Isaac just hoped to not experience what Earth had seen at the end of that era. There was a great diversity of shrubs and trees that littered the landscape. There were no animals roaming the land, but most likely, a sprouting diversity of life lived underneath the oceanâs surface. It would be Isaacâs job now, since Amy wasnât there, to find out just how far along this diversification extended.
Many fish were most likely in the sea, which would be perfect to add to a nutritional diet that they all desperately needed. Regardless, it was important to proceed with caution on the fish front. There must be studies done to make sure of the short-term and long-term effects of consuming this alien source of calories. Also, it would be reckless to throw off the balance of life in the oceans by their presence.
